YOUR

Comprehensive Exams

Matthew C. Peterson, DMD, PA

Comprehensive

Exams

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you see your dentist for dental exams every 6 months. It’s because regular visits to your dentist is necessary for the maintenance of healthy gums and teeth.

But checking your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay and periodontal disease is only one aspect of a complete dental examination. We will also evaluate your head and neck to look for signs of abnormalities. Then we will examine your mouth for any signs of diabetes, oral cancer and/or vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. After that, our dental hygienist will clean your teeth and explain to you how you can maintain good oral hygiene at home.

New patients should have a comprehensive dental exam on their first visit, and then every 3 years thereafter. But aside from this, the ADA also recommends a periodic oral exam during each visit to determine any changes in the oral health of the patient since his or her last comprehensive evaluation.
